Every destination on the Essence of Costa Rica itinerary was chosen because it represents something irreplaceable about this extraordinary country.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Thirteen days that capture the very essence of Costa Rica

Every transfer is arranged, every guide is briefed, and every key experience is already included. You simply arrive and Costa Rica does the rest.

1

Welcome to Costa Rica.  Your 13-day adventure begins in San José

A Costa Rica Top Tours representative greets you personally at Juan Santamaría International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in San José. Depending on your arrival time, take the evening to rest and settle in or venture into the lively Barrio Escalante neighbourhood for dinner and your first taste of Costa Rican cuisine. Tomorrow brings an early start and one of the most dramatic travel days of the entire journey.

2

Into the jungle.  The boat journey to Tortuguero’s remote lodge

An early morning departure takes you east through the magnificent Braulio Carrillo National Park, where cloud-covered mountains and dense jungle line the road. Stop for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast at a local restaurant along the route. At the dock, board a boat and navigate through lush tropical canals, the only way to reach your jungle lodge. Arrive at Pachira Lodge for lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring the colourful, car-free village of Tortuguero, a small Caribbean community and one of the world’s most significant green sea turtle nesting sites. Dinner at the lodge.

3

Rainforest trails at dawn and a canal boat safari in the afternoon

Start the morning with a guided nature walk through the lodge’s jungle trails. Your bilingual naturalist guide will point out extraordinary flora and fauna.  Poison dart frogs, howler monkeys, tropical birds, and the intricate ecosystem of the Caribbean rainforest. The morning is then yours at leisure before the afternoon’s guided boat tour through Tortuguero National Park’s canal network. Watch for river turtles basking on logs, spectacled caimans at the waterline, great green macaws overhead, and monkeys moving through the canopy. Lunch and dinner at the lodge.

4

From the jungle canals to the Caribbean coast.  Arrival in Puerto Viejo

After breakfast, board the boat back to the mainland and continue south by road along the Caribbean coast. Stop for lunch along the way before arriving in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. At this vibrant destination, Afro-Caribbean culture, tropical beaches, lush rainforest, and coral reefs collide in the most gloriously unhurried way. Puerto Viejo moves to its own rhythm, and it’s unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica. Check into your bungalow hotel and let the Caribbean atmosphere work on you.

5

A full Caribbean day.  Reef, rainforest, and Afro-Caribbean culture

A free day to explore one of Costa Rica’s most distinctive and rewarding destinations at your own pace. The options range from effortlessly relaxed to genuinely adventurous, and the beauty is that there’s no wrong choice.

6

The adventure day.  Pacuare River rafting, then on to Arenal Volcano

This is one of the most memorable days on the Essence of Costa Rica; today combines two of the country’s most extraordinary experiences in a single day. Depart towards the highlands and descend to the Pacuare River.  Widely considered one of the most scenic white-water rivers in the world. Your rafting journey carries you through deep rainforest canyons, past hidden waterfalls, and through thrilling Class III–IV rapids, surrounded by untouched jungle. Lunch is served after the rafting experience. In the afternoon, continue north to La Fortuna, where Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most active and iconic, rises dramatically above the surrounding forest. Check in to your hotel and catch your first views of the volcano at dusk.

7

Above the canopy.  Sky Tram gondola, Sky Trek zip line & hot springs

A full day at one of Costa Rica’s most celebrated destinations, combining panoramic views, high-altitude thrills, and volcanic relaxation. Begin the morning on the Sky Tram, a scenic gondola ride that ascends through layers of rainforest to the Miguel Ángel observation point, where Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal, and the full sweep of the Tilarán Mountain Range are spread below you. Then comes Sky Trek, the exhilarating zip-line descent, gliding above the forest canopy and across dramatic canyon drops with the volcano as your constant backdrop. In the afternoon, unwind in the natural hot springs, geothermal pools fed directly by Arenal’s volcanic activity, set in tropical gardens as the sun sets over the jungle.

8

From volcano to Pacific.  Arrival at Manuel Antonio

After breakfast, transfer west across Costa Rica’s rural highland landscapes towards the Central Pacific Coast. The drive passes through small towns, coffee farms, and scenic valleys before the road descends to the warm Pacific. Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica’s most visited destinations for very good reason, its national park combines extraordinary wildlife with genuinely beautiful beaches in a way that is hard to match anywhere in the world. Check in to Hotel Parador and spend the afternoon settling in, exploring the hotel’s facilities, or taking an introductory walk along the coast.

9

Manuel Antonio National Park.  Where the rainforest walks into the sea

A morning guided visit to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the smallest but most biodiverse national parks in the world. Walk trails that weave between tall forest trees alive with white-faced capuchin monkeys, three-toed sloths, squirrel monkeys (endemic to this region), and iguanas sunbathing on the path. The trail eventually opens onto pristine Pacific beaches where the rainforest meets the ocean in a scene of exceptional natural beauty. Your afternoon is free to return to the beach, relax at Hotel Parador, or explore the area at your own pace.

10

The road south.  Arriving at Playa Dominical and the wild Southern Pacific

Private transfer south along the Pacific coast to Playa Dominical, a quieter, wilder, and deeply beautiful stretch of coastline that marks the gateway to Costa Rica’s most remote natural region. Dominical has a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere completely different in character from the busier tourist areas further north. Your hotel, Cuna del Ángel, sits within a lush jungle setting near the coast. The afternoon is yours to explore the beach, discover local restaurants, or decompress before tomorrow’s extraordinary Corcovado expedition.

Corcovado is protected and managed by Costa Rica’s conservation authority. Read more at the SINAC official website.

11

Corcovado.  A journey to one of the most biodiverse places on Earth

An early departure to Uvita Beach, where a boat carries you south along Costa Rica’s dramatic Southern Pacific coastline to Corcovado National Park’s San Pedrillo Station. During the ocean crossing, keep watch for spinner dolphins, sea birds, and, in season, the breathtaking spectacle of humpback whale migrations. At San Pedrillo, an expert naturalist guide leads you into primary old-growth rainforest on trails that National Geographic called home to “the most biologically intense place on Earth.” This is where jaguars hunt, scarlet macaws nest, Baird’s tapirs wade in rivers, and the full extraordinary density of life in a pristine Neotropical rainforest reveals itself. Lunch is included. Return by boat to Uvita in the afternoon and transfer back to your hotel.

Corcovado is managed and protected by Costa Rica’s national conservation authority. Read more at the SINAC official website.

🌿 Corcovado National Park, declared by National Geographic as “the most biologically intense place on Earth.” Home to 13 endangered species, 400 bird species, and 140 mammal species in one of the last intact areas of Pacific lowland rainforest.

12

The final drive.  Back to San José with a full heart

Private transfer back to San José.  A scenic drive north along the Pacific coast and through the Central Valley. Arrive at your San José hotel and enjoy a final free afternoon. Use the time to pick up souvenirs in the Barrio Escalante neighbourhood, enjoy a leisurely last dinner at one of the city’s excellent restaurants, and reflect on thirteen extraordinary days across one of the planet’s most remarkable countries.

13

Farewell, Costa Rica, until the jungle calls you back

A final breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to Juan Santamaría International Airport at the appropriate time for your departure flight. You leave having experienced Tortuguero’s secret canals, the Pacuare River’s thundering rapids, Arenal’s volcanic energy, Manuel Antonio’s extraordinary biodiversity, and the raw primeval wonder of Corcovado. The Essence of Costa Rica is fully revealed. Pura vida.
